History
In the summer of 1997, the Joi Ying Dragon & Lion Dance
Group was formally established in San Jose. At the ChaoChow Temple, an "Eye
Dotting" consecrating ceremony of our lions took place which led to the
beginning of our sacred lions and many wonderful years to follow.
Joi Ying began with
Master Vinh Luu, his family members, Master Chuck Luu, his family, and four
disciples. Together, we practiced kung fu and lion dancing when possible. The
enthusiasm soon grew to the point where practicing as "time permits" was no
longer sufficient. We began to practice every Saturday and that has become our
routine ever since. Initially, all practice took place in Master Vinh Luu’s
garage. As more members joined, we had to move our practice location to a local
neighborhood park with occasional small group practice in the garage.
Lion dancing for fun
isn’t our only goal, we also join in many charity, community, & disaster relief
events to make a difference upon others. All of our members, young and old, are
well exposed to the opportunity and the meaning of serving the community. Many
of our performances are usually oriented toward inspiring young members to
realize that it is within their power to help with making the world a better
place to live.
With the endless
knowledge of both Masters Vinh Luu and Chuck Luu, our young men and women learn
kung fu in the many forms to include the basic fundamental principles,
discipline, and proper techniques. All these provide for a comprehensive
physical and mental challenge, as well as a sense of balance, control, and
strengthening of one’s body and enhancement of a focused mind.
Bamboo pole climbing has
always been a part of the many Joi Ying performances. After 10 years of
establishment, Joi Ying added a 8-meter tall pole which perhaps is the tallest
there is in the USA. Our first major event was the Lunar New Year Spring
Festival Parade of 1998 in San Jose which we earned the 1st place award.
The past 10 years have
provided us with great learning experience and wonderful memories. We look
forward to another 10 years of great fun and more opportunity to serve the
community and partake in other civic engagements.
